A Dream Come True: Wedding Portraits at San Francisco City Hall

Not every couple who comes to San Francisco City Hall is here to exchange vows. For some, like Iris and Garrett, the magic of this building goes back much further.

When she was a little girl, she visited San Francisco City Hall for the very first time. Standing under its grand dome and looking up at the sweeping staircases, she felt completely in awe. From that moment on, she dreamed about one day returning in her wedding dress, with the love of her life by her side, to capture portraits in this breathtaking space.

Months before their wedding, Iris and Garrett reached out to me with one request: they wanted timeless, romantic photos at San Francisco City Hall—even though they weren’t holding their ceremony there. The building simply held too much meaning to her childhood memories and their love story to let the moment pass by.

On the day of their session, we walked through the elegant marble halls, pausing at some of the most iconic areas. If you’re planning your own session here, these are the Top 5 Spots for San Francisco City Hall Wedding Photos:

1. The Grand Staircase

The sweeping staircase is one of the most recognizable and dramatic features of City Hall. It’s perfect for wide, romantic shots that capture the scale and beauty of the architecture.

2. The 4th Floor Galleries

Bathed in natural light, these galleries are airy, elegant, and ideal for intimate portraits with soft, glowing tones.

3. The Mayor’s Balcony

With ornate details and a view overlooking the staircase, this spot adds a regal touch to any wedding photo session.

4. The Rotunda

The heart of San Francisco City Hall, the rotunda offers stunning symmetry and makes a gorgeous backdrop for couple’s portraits.

5. The Exterior Steps

Don’t skip the outside! The front of the building—with its grand doors and iconic gold detailing—provides a timeless finishing touch to your session.

Throughout the day, [Couple’s Names] laughed, embraced, and soaked in every moment together as we made our way through these unforgettable spots. The soft natural light filtered in perfectly, wrapping around them as we captured their love story among the marble columns and arches.

What I loved most about this session is how personal it was. This wasn’t just about stunning wedding photos (though they got plenty of those!). It was about fulfilling a dream, honoring a memory, and celebrating love in a place that inspired it years ago.

San Francisco City Hall will always be one of my favorite places to photograph couples—it’s grand, timeless, and endlessly romantic. But sessions like this remind me that it’s more than just a beautiful backdrop. For many, it holds real stories and lifelong dreams.

Congratulations to Iris and Garrett for making this vision a reality. I’m so honored I got to capture it for you.
