Rainy Wedding at The Gardens at Heather Farm

Rainy Wedding at The Gardens at Heather Farm

Early April weddings in the Bay Area always come with a little bit of weather mystery — sunshine one moment, light drizzle the next. For this rainy wedding at The Gardens at Heather Farm, we were gifted only rain!

With rain in the forecast, I arrived early to scout the gardens and look for photo spots with some cover. I’ve photographed here many times, but this time something magical caught my eye — a cherry tree in full bloom, glowing pink against the soft gray sky. It felt like nature’s own wedding decoration, and I knew we had to use it.

When my couple arrived, they weren’t fazed by the weather at all. Umbrella in hand and full of joy, they were ready to embrace the moment. We ventured out into the gardens, finding soft light and that romantic mist that only happens on rainy days. Their photos turned out timeless — fresh, colorful, and full of love.

Tips for Beautiful Rainy Wedding Photos

Rain doesn’t have to ruin your wedding photos — in fact, it can make them extra dreamy. Here are a few tips for couples (and photographers!) to make the most of a rainy wedding day:

1. Bring clear umbrellas.
They’re practical and stylish, letting the light shine through while keeping you dry. Clear umbrellas photograph beautifully and don’t distract from your outfits or faces.

2. 100% Waterproof make-up

3. Embrace the reflections.
Rain creates gorgeous reflections on stone paths and puddles — they can add depth and a little magic to your photos.

4. Trust your photographer.
We’ll find covered areas, interesting textures, and creative lighting to turn the rain into part of your story. Sometimes those unexpected moments — a little wind, a sprinkle of rain — become the most memorable images.

5. Dress smart.
If you plan to explore outdoors, have a second pair of shoes or boots ready. And bring a towel to dab off any water drops between photos!

6. Enjoy the moment.
Rainy weddings have a certain kind of romance that sunny days can’t replicate — cozy, cinematic, and full of character. When you lean into it, your joy shines through no matter the forecast.
